A few excerpts:

“Although that’s one of the points that I made earlier. I mean, we’ve got to be careful about what we say about each other sometimes, because it boxes us in in ways that makes it difficult for us to work together, because our constituents start believing us. They don’t know sometimes this is just politics what you guys — or folks on my side do sometimes.

“So just a tone of civility instead of slash and burn would be helpful. The problem we have sometimes is a media that responds only to slash-and-burn-style politics. …

“… I’ve just got to take this last question as an example of how it’s very hard to have the kind of bipartisan work that we’re going to do, because the whole question was structured as a talking point for running a campaign.

“That’s why I say if we’re going to frame these debates in ways that allow us to solve them, then we can’t start off by figuring out, A, who’s to blame; B, how can we make the American people afraid of the other side. And unfortunately, that’s how our politics works right now. …

“And so the question is, at what point can we have a serious conversation about Medicare and its long-term liability, or a serious question about — a serious conversation about Social Security, or a serious conversation about budget and debt in which we’re not simply trying to position ourselves politically. That’s what I’m committed to doing. We won’t agree all the time in getting it done, but I’m committed to doing it.”

His speech and comments reminded me of Stephen Colbert’s interview with Tom Brokaw a few weeks ago in which Brokaw said, “We can’t get through these profound challenges…if everything becomes a food fight.”

Good luck to Obama in convincing Congress to govern instead of spending their time in office planning their next campaign. It will probably only happen if their constituents demand it, and that is unlikely when so many of those constituents are forming their opinions based on polarized and polarizing media.

The abuse of these infant calves is merciless. There is no excuse for skinning animals alive and shocking them time after time with electric prods when it’s obvious they are too weak to stand.

Veganism for me started when I was in Vermont stuck in road construction beside a veal lot. I didn’t become vegan overnight, but immediately reduced my intake of dairy products, including Ben & Jerry’s, whose headquarters ironically, was just a few miles down the road from that veal lot.

“Operations at Bushway Packing, Inc., a veal slaughterhouse in Vermont, have been shut down by Secretary of Agriculture Tom Vislack, pending further investigation. The footage that an undercover investigator from the Humane Society of the United States obtained was truly shocking, showing calves only days-old being shocked and prodded, and live calves being left in piles of dead calves.” –VegNewsletter

I’d hoped I could read more about the shutdown of the slaughterhouse without seeing any photos. I couldn’t bring myself to click play on the video on the HSUS website. The still image is almost too horrifying to bear.

It seems that there is so little to argue about that the opposition has to incite their supporters by reframing things like end-of-life counseling to fiction like killing older citizens. They’re really afraid of single-payer health care. Why not take the fight to them and propose real health care reform; a single-payer system? Let them argue the point instead of their made-up boogie men. I think there is much stronger support in this country for real change in the form of a single-payer system than for expanding the health insurance industry. Why can’t there be debate in this country about the issues without diverting public attention with fairy tale trolls?

My message 09.05.15:

President Obama's argument that our insurance based health care system is already in place so insurance should be part of health care "reform" is just an excuse, just bowing to pressure from insurance companies. Insurance companies and equity markets provide no health benefit to U.S. citizens and have NO place in our health care system, much less their current position of controlling decisions about life, death, and quality of life. Now is the time for strong leadership. Our economy, and more importantly our health, should not be sacrificed to maintain an industry that exists only to profit from one of our citizens' primary needs. Single payer health care is the only real solution.

I listened to CSPAN for a couple hours this morning. I was appalled that for about 45 minutes Congressmen (Yes, men. No women.) were “debating” the passage of a bill honoring the Pittsburg Steelers. It felt like these elected representatives were making a joke of the current economic situation. Instead of spending their time, energy, intelligence…and our money, on making progress on real problems, they were making a farce of the legislative system.

I guess it was no worse than most of the Republican input on the economic stimulus debate. Republicans passed inscrutable bank bail outs prior to Obama’s inauguration, but now oppose creating jobs while moving the country toward energy independence and lower health care costs. It seems that number one on the Republican agenda is causing Obama and the Democrats to fail. At least in the debates I’ve heard on CSPAN, there has been a lot of criticism by Republicans, but no constructive alternatives. The Bush administration created the current crisis and it seems as if the Republican party has decided their best chance of regaining power is to facilitate a deepening crisis and more pain for citizens over the next four years.

I wish there was a minimum requirement of CSPAN viewing in order to vote in the U.S. Then more citizens would see for themselves what is going on, rather than getting a summary from their favorite commentator.

I think Barack Obama must be so tired of hearing that. It totally minimizes who he is, and the personal preparation he has done, and organization he has created to win the Presidency and subsequently run the country. Barack Obama is NOT anybody. He has unique talents and has spent his life educating himself and taking on experiences to make himself into a person who is qualified to be President. Yes, I understand the phrase as a mantra to inspire children. And it can be argued that the racial barrier to the Presidency has been broken for African-Americans…if not for women or Hispanics or Asian-Americans. But please, give the man some credit! Obama’s election does not mean that now “anybody can be President.”

All the recent bail-outs are deeply disturbing. It is appalling and embarrassing that our government has found trillions of dollars to bail-out people who live in big homes and drive nice cars; basically have every modern convenience and luxury; while there are minimal funds to help people who are living in their cars or on the street, no money for universal healthcare, and public education programs suffer from lack of funding. Our country’s priorities are frightening, if not downright disgusting. Do they really reflect the priorities of the voters, or do voters just make fundamentally poor decisions when electing people to carry out their priorities?
