Bail out commercial real estate developers??

All the recent bail-outs are deeply disturbing. It is appalling and embarrassing that our government has found trillions of dollars to bail-out people who live in big homes and drive nice cars; basically have every modern convenience and luxury; while there are minimal funds to help people who are living in their cars or on the street, no money for universal healthcare, and public education programs suffer from lack of funding. Our country’s priorities are frightening, if not downright disgusting. Do they really reflect the priorities of the voters, or do voters just make fundamentally poor decisions when electing people to carry out their priorities?

Flash skin not loading

This is a little Flash Tip / reminder-to-self. If you search Google it seems to be a common problem for the transport, control skin not to load for Flash movies. I finally found the answer on the Adobe site … duh. Usually you publish your movie in the same folder containing your .fla, movie .swf, .flv, and .swf for the skin. It all works when you play the .swf locally, but on a web server the skin doesn’t load. The oddity is, on your web server the .flv stays in the same directory as the .swf for your movie, but the default location for the skin .swf, is the directory the html file loading the .swf is located.

An example, in case the verbal description was not entirely clear –

public_html/
    my-awesome-vacation-video.htm
    some-cool-skin.swf
    flash_movies/
        vacation-video.swf
        vacation-video.flv

This is not the only possible structure. You can specify different locations when you create your movie in Flash, but this represents a default structure if you don’t want to store your Flash movies in the root of your web directory.

In the example above, if Flash spit out my-awesome-vacation-video.htm, you would need to edit the path for vacation-video.swf to flash-movies/vacation-video.swf. There are several ways to insert a Flash movie into a web page so I am not going to give a code snippet here. Check out swfobject for an easy, cross browser method for loading a Flash movie.

Big snow

Wanna go skiing?
30″ of snow fell here between Monday evening and Tuesday morning. The snow depth was many inches higher than Bonnie and it was pretty funny to see her jump in and disappear briefly before she popped out again.

Substitute 200k results

The December 6, 2008, Radium Springs 200k Brevet was described as having 4130′ climbing, with elevations ranging from 4000′ to 5300′. My three-day weekend substitute totaled 236k with 11900′ climbing; elevations from 7500′ to 10000′. Not sure if I could have made 200k yesterday, even on relatively flat terrain, at a lower elevation, but I feel ready for a 200k now….well, maybe not tomorrow!

Today, Bonnie and I went for a nice, slow trail run. Then she had a bath and I got on my bike for a couple trips to the top of the pass. I felt surprisingly good on my bike today. Better than yesterday, but there was not much wind until the last few miles. The highway was covered with sand. That slowed my descents.

Yesterday I started to bonk about three hours into my ride. Today I ate a little more frequently and mixed my drink stronger to compensate for drinking less in the cool weather. I felt like I could have kept going….except it was almost dark, and 40F deg, and I was dressed for 60F.

I don’t really expect this little blog series to be very interesting it was for accountability, as Olga wrote about in November.
