Morning visitor

An adolescent bear was right outside the front door this morning. Its reddish, light-brown coat looked beautiful in the rainy, gray light. Unfortunately I did not get a photo. I was too busy telling Bonnie that yes, this was something I wanted her to let me know about. Then wishing it would hang around eating grass in the yard so I wouldn’t have to mow. Then remembering that I needed to try to impress upon the bear that people and their houses are not good places for bears to hang around. Then it left and I couldn’t get a photo.

Jessie intuitively knew about bears. She hardly ever barked, but for as long as she could hear, anytime day or night that there was a bear outside she used a special, very quiet, “woof-woof.” Her way of saying, “There is something outside you should know about, but I don’t want it to know I am in here.” Not that she was a wimp. Once when she was visiting a friend and a bear walked in the back door she barked it back outside. She just preferred to avoid confrontation if possible.

After two and a half days in the boot my foot feels better than it has in many months. I am sure I will get sick of the boot soon enough, but for now I am happy that it seems to be working.

Let the healing begin

Buena Vista Canine Classic. 2005.The stress fracture that was not a stress fracture IS a stress fracture. It seemed pretty obvious when pointed out to me on the zoom-able, digital x-ray. I don’t know how I can possibly be ready for a 150 mile stage race in seven weeks. Maybe my boot will earn Bonnie and I sympathy points for our Frisbee freestyle routine. We can use all the help we can get and it certainly won’t improve our choreography.

Beautiful weekend

Dodgeton Trail, near meadow. Small. April 27 2007.We have had great weather this weekend. Sunny and warm in the morning followed by mini-thunderstorms in the afternoon; perfect for those post-workout naps.

Saturday Bonnie and I went for a 3-hour hike. (I am still on the no-run plan.) I was in shorts and t-shirt. Pretty good for 10,000 feet in April. There is still lots of snow on the trails, especially on the west side of the valley, though you can’t see any in these photos.

Rock with orange lichen.  Orange lichen macro.

Sunday, I took Bonnie for a short run with the bike and then went for 45 miles by myself. This was my first time on the road with aero bars and I am not confident enough with them to try pulling the trailer yet, though the aero bars are far less scary on the road than the rollers. I have fallen off my rollers about ten times since I installed the aero bars.
